Where to skate
The biggest problem with skating in and around Halifax is the hills. It's really difficult to find a large flat area that is level, smooth, clean and unpopulated. As I find places that are skate friendly I'll add them to this page. If you have a favourite then please let me know. Thanks
Indoor
The YMCA in
Halifax is the only place locally to offer indoor skate sessions on a
regular basis. Friday evening they run two sessions, at 16:45, 18:00.
Cost is £2.20 for non-members including skate hire. During school
holidays (not sure about Summer) they run lunchtime sessions 11:00 to
13:00. You can also book skate parties (well in advance, they are very
popular). Their web site
gives times and a link to a map.
Outdoor
Here are a few parks that are skater friendly.
The only images that I could find of the skate parks in Calderdale are on Calderdale Online
site under "Arts and Culture". Calderdale's website
lists other skate parks at Mill Fold (Ripponden) and Shroggs park. I've
never been to either of these. I'll post details if/when I do.
Calder Holmes
This is quite a small skate area that dries quite quickly. The ramps and pipes are concrete (Bendcrete layout 3
)
and described thus: 1.5m high half pipe, 1.5m high quarter pipe, 1.5m
flat bank, large 0.4 m high fun box with grind rail and grind block.
Wellholme
The surface here is tarmac and not as silky as Calder Holmes. The pipes/ramps are rubber coated metal. From memory I'd say a 2m half-pipe, 2 x 1.5m quarter pipe, two grind rails, a grind box and a 0.5m flat ramp.
Centre Vale
I've only been here once when I wasn't brave enough to touch the ramps. Ramps/pipes are yellow. I recall it being fairly small stuff.
Crow Wood
Fell trying to drop in here, and hurt my wrist, so I don't like it. Small. A 1.5m quarter, 1.8m quarter and two rails. There is a shelter there too which has ramps leading up to it.
People's Park
This isn't a skate park. It's a Victorian park that has been renovated. But,
the paths are smooth, wide and bordered by grass. Some slopes take a
little bravery to descend without braking, but the corners at the
bottom are manageable. This picture shows the elevated section, which
is level and ideal for messing around on. This is where I hold my
lessons. An aerial view is available on Google Maps, though it is a little out of date.
Millfold, Ripponden
Someone at work was telling me that there is a skate park here. I don't have any further details.
Happy Skating!
